Rank System Monkofdoom on Mon Nov 01, 2010 4:15 pm

Today GOMtv decided to reveal the ranking system and explain to us exactly how it works.

GOMtv.net - Source - Rank System

Rank order

Recruit ->Private First Class-> Corporal -> Sergeant -> Staff Sergeant -> Platoon Sergeant -> Master Sergeant -> Second Lieutenant -> First Lieutenant -> Captain -> Major -> Lieutenant Major -> Colonel -> Brigadier General -> Major General -> Lieutenant General -> General

Every player who qualifies the preliminary rounds into the main tournament gets ranked.

If you qualify into the next round your rank gets promoted by one rank.

Only winning the finals gets you promoted by two ranks.

The rank is continued into following GSL seasons, so the players who qualified and played in Season 1 will start Season 2 with the rank that they were granted from their previous results.

To help you understand we will make FruitDealer as our example.

Rank of FruitDealer

  • Season 1
  • Ro64 – Starts as a Recruit
  • Ro32 – Promoted to Private First Class
  • Ro16 – Promoted to Corporal
  • Ro8 – Promoted to Sergeant
  • Ro4 – Promoted to Staff Sergeant
  • Final – Promoted to Platoon Sergeant
  • Wins Finals – Promoted to Second Lieutenant (Champion gets promoted by two ranks.)
  • Season 2
  • Ro64 – Starts as Second Lieutenant
  • Ro32 – Promoted to First Lieutenant

* So FruitDealer who is in Ro32 is currently ranked as a First Lieutenant

We hope this post helps you understand the ranking process of the players.

Ro32 of GSL Season 2 - Orange Post Monkofdoom on Fri Oct 22, 2010 11:48 am

GOMtv.net - Source - Ro32 of GSL Season 2

Starting from Ro32 the matches start at 7pm KST(GMT+9), so keep this in mind before watching our live broadcasts.

This season the number of viewers, for both in Korea and globally, increased dramatically comparing to Season 1. Ro64 was held at GOMtv Mok-Dong Studio and a lot of fans came to watch despite of the rounds being on working days.

This season 'The Emperor' SlayerSBoxeR and the 'Terran Genius' NaDa joined the tournament and proved that they are living legends showing off their high skill levels to win in Ro64.Also qualifying to Ro32, last season champion FruitDealer and the runner up HopeTorture was constant and seemed confident to repeat their success.

Out of 29 Terrans in Ro64 13 made it to Ro32 showing 45% winning percentage, for Protoss 8 out of the 20 players qualified showing 40% winning percentage. Zerg was the most impressive, having only 15 players in Ro64, 73% of them which is 11 players advanced to Ro32.

The support and love shown by the worldwide e-sports fans during the first rounds of the GSL Season 2 was very lively and explosive. We hope this continues throughout the tournament and for the tournaments coming up. We will constantly do our best to provide better services and to support each and everyone.

Season 2 So Far Monkofdoom on Thu Oct 21, 2010 2:04 pm

Season 2 So Far

The round of 64 has finished and all 32 games have been played, as always there have been upsets and predictions have come true, but one welcomed difference this season is the race distribution.

As the ro64 started we saw a lot more Terran and a big drop in the number of Protoss with Zerg players sitting at a similar place to last season. The difference this time is the number of Zerg to make it through the first round.

Season 1 Race DistributionSeason 2 Race Distribution

Protoss are the least represented race in the round of 32 and Terran are only just above Zerg, it seems Zerg definitely had the best win to loss ratio this round.

The exciting thing about this is the later rounds will hopefully be more split amongst the races are we may experience some great mirror matches from Zerg as well as the other more common matchups.

It's hard to say whether this change has occurred as a direct result of patch 1.1.2, whether it's a case of Zerg becoming more powerful or just Terran and Protoss players not being able to adapt to their racial changes but it will be interesting to see what the future brings.

Round of 32

The round of 32 is starting tomorrow at the more usual 19:00 KST time, you can check out the current season 2 brackets for what to expect.

Just how many people watch the GSL? Monkofdoom on Wed Oct 20, 2010 5:52 pm

The BoxeR Effect

Just over 48 hours ago StarCraft 1 legend SlayerS_BoxeR played his first games in a GSL event, his participation has had a huge effect around the globe and millions of people are hearing about the game.

When the match went live so many people wanted to watch that GOMTV and many other famous StarCraft sites couldn't handle the load. The below image shows that 774,866 people were logged in at one point, and that's just the Korean side.

Live Korean Viewers

Since then the Korean VOD has had over 1.1 million views.

Korean VOD Views

With the English VOD is sitting in just over 100,000 views.

English VOD Views

We're not sure exactly how many people tuned into the English stream but the most popular (known) re-stream had over 13,000 viewers at one point.

Just how many people watch the GSL?

This totals just over 2,000,000 views of one match in 48 hours, without considering how many people watched the official English live stream and the numbers continue to rise by thousands every hour.

The GSL is proving to be a massive success and with the return of BoxeR it is obvious that the Korean crowds are being drawn in. As he continues his efforts in the round of 32 we can only imagine how big the numbers will get.
